A Colonial Departure

A Colonial Departure
Escape by ship
Bardamu leaves France for Africa, hoping distance will spare him further military danger. The voyage instead brings him into a claustrophobic society of colonial officers and officials.
A new hierarchy
His fellow passengers treat him as an intruder because he has paid his own fare. Their suspicion makes the journey another lesson in power and exclusion.
The Trading Post

The Trading Post
An inherited trap
Bardamu reaches Bikomimbo and finds a post abandoned by Robinson, with spoiled supplies and a collapsing shelter. The assignment offers neither reliable authority nor a viable future.
Escape by fire
Fever, isolation, and the company’s threats narrow his choices. He burns the post and flees into the jungle, destroying the evidence that might have bound him to the company.
A Passage into Bondage

A Passage into Bondage
Sold while ill
In San Tapeta, fever leaves Bardamu helpless. The people caring for him sell him to a galley captain, turning rescue into another form of captivity.
Recovery through labor
He regains enough strength to row across the Atlantic. His survival is accidental and compromised, but the voyage carries him toward the American destination he had imagined.
The Quarantine Job

The Quarantine Job
A strange credential
Held under quarantine, Bardamu persuades officials that he can count and classify fleas. The eccentric skill wins him work and an official route toward the city.
Entry at last
His statistics are carried to New York, and he is eventually sent ashore. The technical pretext opens a door, but it does not cure his hunger or isolation.
The American Disillusion

The American Disillusion
A city of spectacle
Manhattan first overwhelms Bardamu with its scale, commerce, and crowds. The promised abundance remains inaccessible to a penniless newcomer.
Work and departure
The Ford factory reduces him to repetitive motion, while Molly offers kindness and a possible home. His compulsion to leave defeats that refuge, and he returns to France.
